Help with childcare costs

Funding for three and four year olds

All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free nursery education for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday).

Did you know you might be eligible for an extended entitlement of 30 hours of free childcare for working parents? Subject to eligibility*.

Who will be eligible to receive the extended entitlement?

The extra funded hours will be made available to families where both parents (or the sole parent in a lone parent family):

  • Are working and earn on average a weekly minimum amount equivalent to working 16 hours at either National Minimum Wage (NMW) or National Living Wage (NLW)
  • Have an income of less than £100,000 each per year
  • Live in England (parents who are non-EEA nationals must have recourse to public funds to qualify)
  • You may still be eligible to apply if you or your partner:
  • Are taking paid time off work, such as maternity leave, paternity leave or you’re unable to work because you are disabled or have caring

       responsibilities.

  • Are temporarily away from England for a period of up to 6 months, such as on military duty.
  • Your child can start in their childcare place the term after they turn 3 years old and have received a valid 30 hours code, whichever is later. Term start dates are 1st September, 1st January and 1st April.

You may get asked for further information as part of your application, so apply well ahead of the start date for each term.

To keep your 30 hours free childcare place, you need to check your details are up to date every 3 months.

Funding for two year olds

Some two-year-olds are entitled to two-year-old nursery funding. Two-year funding entitles a child to 15 hours of free nursery education for 38 weeks

per year. Your 2-year-old can get free early education and childcare if you get one of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit
  • Tax credits and you have an annual income of under £16,190 before tax
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Support through part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act
  • The Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

A child can also get free early education and childcare if any of the following apply:

  • They’re looked after by a local council
  • They have a current statement of special education needs (SEN) or an education, health and care (EHC) plan
  • They get Disability Living Allowance
  • They’ve left care under a special guardianship order, child arrangements order or adoption order
